Palace Gate

London, Kensington

This apartment is in a Grade II listed Georgian terrace, located close to Hyde Park. The brief was to create a ‘city pad. The existing apartment had been created by a crude 1980’s conversion. An initial strip-out exposed original features, some of which had been damaged. This crystallised our detail design approach to expose and restore original features where recoverable, and where damaged beyond repair or none existent, insert contemporary designed elements. This maintains the integrity of the original fabric and at the same time adds a sense of drama to apartment. A good example is the stone stair case, linking the entrance hall landing and reception to the kitchen and master suite located at the rear of the building. Extensive remodelling was carried out, including structural works to reposition split floor levels, create an enlarged kitchen and bathrooms. Finishes include a mix of stone and parquet timber flooring, stone clad bathrooms, timber panelling to window reveals, together with new period joinery through out. Where new works come into contact with original fabric, ‘separation details’ are employed. All services have been renewed. Traditional cast radiators installed throughout together with Lutron controlled lighting and AV.
