Coombe Lane

London, Kingston Upon Thames

The challenge of this appointment was to create a luxury home out of an unimposing Arts and Craft house that the client’s wife had fallen in love with. We worked closely with the client, leading them through our ideas step by step and fused them with their own aspirations for the house.

The house was remodelled externally and internally. Externally included: Adjustments to the roof, new entrance portico and remodelling of rear the terrace loggia incorporating fluted columns, reinforced acrylic render on the walls, all windows replaced and dynamic ‘slot’ roof lights inserted into the roof, to get natural light into the stairwells and ensuite bath/shower rooms. Internally; it was generally stripped-out, the ground floor lowered to provide greater and more dramatic floor to ceiling heights. Steel work was inserted into the roof structure to enable the first floor to be ‘fully opened up’ creating a dynamic space and family area.

There are high quality finishes through out including: semi precious stone in the master bathroom, fabric lined walls in the master bedroom, painted timber panelling in the dining kitchen, together with a mix of stone and timber floors in other areas.

Under floor heating, scene setting lighting has been installed through out the house together with some £250,000 of ‘boy’s toys’.

A new pool house, of a contemporary design, incorporates a 15m long pool, spa, steam room and showers. To provide a strong link to the ‘outside’ we inserted a large motorized sliding glass roof light over the spar tub, and large full height sliding glass doors onto the garden terraces. The building is connected to the house by a frameless glass link, to minimise the visual connection between the two buildings. Comforts include: air conditioning, under floor heating, scene setting lighting and a large TV screen inset in the wall.

We worked closely with the appointed gardener, to ensure the garden design and planting was sympathetic with the character of the house and played a part in improved its setting.
