Hornton Street

London, Kensington

Planning Listed Building Consent approval was obtained for our sensitive remodelling of this large three bedroom apartment including: Reorientation of the apartment entrance, creation of a master suite, extending the kitchen, into an existing corridor, to provide an eating area, together with improvements to the external spaces

A 1980s ‘modernising’ refurbishment had destroyed most of the original features and character. Our design approach was to re-establish the traditional character of the apartment, but with a ‘twist’, to give it a sense of freshness and vibrancy. To achieve this, door openings were raised and full height panelled doors installed, together with moulded frames, architraves, skirting, window reveal panelling and fibrous plaster cornicing through out. Parquet flooring is laid in the double reception, hall and lobbies extended kitchen /and eating area adding a sense of space and unity together with a contemporary ‘twist’ by the use of Wenge hardwood. The contemporary designed kitchen ‘floats’ off the floor and has elements inset into the walls, adding dynamism as well as an enhanced sense of space. The bathrooms have high quality finishes: Nero Marquina marble in the master ensuite and a combination of black Bisazza Mosaic and full height mirror in the shower room. The design of the ensuite is complemented with a hand painted classical moulded timber console table, with a Nero Marquina marble moulded top with a large modern ceramic basin sitting on it combined with wall mounted (Kelly Hoppen) chrome fittings.

All services are new and include: cast iron radiators in principle rooms, under floor heating in bathrooms and kitchen and eating area, scene setting lighting throughout, with audio visual facilities in the living room and master suite.

To provide a sense of calm, an important ingredient for a central London apartment, the front and rear courtyard are landscaped in a semi-formal design incorporating a mix of established plants set in generous planters, with the rear courtyard providing a quiet safe space for alfresco dinning.
