This building is part of our client’s portfolio of three large ex Littlewoods department stores we remodelled / extended. For this site we explored a mixed retail and residential option and an enlarged retail only scheme, which was the option adopted and submitted for planning and subsequently approved. The existing department store faced onto a public square. However the building’s longest frontage was along an uninviting pedestrian side street, which leads to an equally uninviting secondary entrance to Romford’s most successful shopping centre, The Liberty. Our design created, in agreement with neighbouring retailers Debenhams, Hammerson and the local authority, a covered glazed mall out of the side street which to all intent and purposes became part of the Liberty Centre. This also had the benefit of our client’s building having Grade ‘A’ shop units on two frontages. The building was completely remodelled including: subdivision into a variety of unit sizes, an additional floor added, a first floor link directly into the neighbouring Debenhams department store together with a new dynamic facade and shop fronts.
