Canterbury Christ Church University / Petros Court – Student Accommodation

We were selected together with our developer client, following a successful financial and design tender, to partner Canterbury Christchurch University (CCCU) for the delivery of a 418 student study room facility. The scheme was developed in close co-operation with CCCU. The mix of accommodation includes: flats of 5-8 study bedrooms with a shared kitchen / living room.

The ‘courtyard’ concept provides a safe environment for students, where they can meet up and interact, an important part of student life and education. Equally important, the courtyard concept minimises the impact of student activity on the surrounding residential development. The scheme comprises five compositional elements, arranged to provide ‘enclosure’. The form, massing and height of each element / building relates to its particular boundary situation. Building heights vary from three to five stories with the taller building located centrally in the site (opposite Augustine House).

The elevation design expresses a sense of order, interest and legibility. The repeating rhythm of different window modules and expressed entrances break down the visual mass of the buildings. The main two façade materials of Trespa panels and insulated acrylic render support the legibility of the buildings and relate well to the surroundings.

The scheme gained planning consent in August 2013, the first phase of 193 student rooms was completed on site in April 2015 and the second phase of the remaining 225 student rooms was completed in August 2015.
